Pickup: how to enter before beat one

First sing a short “Gó-” on beat three, and start the regular strum with “ra-” on the next beat one.

Adrian4 minupdated

A song does not always wait until the start of a full bar for its first syllable. Sometimes the voice begins just before it and leads the guitar towards the strong first beat. This short run-up is called a pickup. Treat it as the start of the regular strum and every later word will shift, even if the grips themselves are correct.

Open Góralu, czy ci nie żal and select bars 6 to 9. The page is in 3/4, so count “one, two, three”. The first two beats of bar 6 are empty and the syllable “Gó-” enters on three. Only in the next bar does “ra-” meet beat one and the D chord.

Play it wrongly first, but only once

Without the guitar, say “Gó-ra-lu” as if “Gó-” began the bar. Clap firmly with that first syllable and continue “two, three”. In this version “ra-” lands on two. When the arrangement plays, D and the start of bar 7 will arrive somewhere else than your accent.

This single wrong pass is there to reveal the symptom, not teach a habit. Do not repeat it until it feels smooth. If the phrase sounds as though it is constantly chasing the accompaniment, mistaking the pickup for beat one may be the cause.

Now let “Gó-” lead into beat one

Start the metronome on the song page. Listen to one full pass without singing, then count bar 6: “one, two, three”. Stay silent on the first two beats. Sing “Gó-” on three, then say “ra-” and clap on the next one. The layout is simple:

placevoiceguitar in the exercise
bar 6: one, twosilencesilence
bar 6: threeGó-still no regular strum
bar 7: onera-D and the first strong stroke

Repeat the motion three times without the guitar. Then add one D downstroke on beat one of bar 7. Once the entrance no longer needs thought, strum regularly through bar 9. You may prepare the hand before “Gó-”, but do not add a strong stroke there simply to give the voice something to hold.

Two shorter checks

Ogniska już dogasa blask uses the same mechanism in a four-beat bar. After three beats of rest in bar 1, “Og-” enters on four and “ni-” starts the next bar on one. It checks whether you understand the function of a pickup without tying it to 3/4.

W żłobie leży raises the bar. Its lone “W” in bar 5 arrives on the final sixteenth note before the bar line, and “żło-” begins bar 6. Do not count this entrance until the quarter-note “Gó-” is secure. A pickup can be much shorter than one beat.

What the song page shows, and what it does not promise

Incomplete opening bars are filled with rests in the data so that every bar has the usual width on screen. Those three empty beats are not a separate musical introduction. They are the space before a short run-up, and their meaning appears only when you connect them to the next beat one.

The position of a pickup belongs to a particular arrangement and may change between verses. Highlighting shows this page's notation, but it does not award an automatic result. Listen for success: the pickup leads into the first full bar and the right hand does not move the regular strum earlier.

Chord data is accurate to the beat, although words and melody can use smaller divisions. Do not infer an exact chord-change point inside a beat from it. Tempo does not define the pickup either; a slower setting keeps the same relationship to beat one.

Repertoire note: all three song pages are marked public domain in the current Guitarmatic pool. The repository carries a separate qualification for the Polish words of Ogniska już dogasa blask, so that status must not be extended to every version of the lyrics.

Enter before beat one, not in its place

Select bars 6 to 9. Sing “Gó-” on beat three. Place “ra-” and the first regular D stroke on the next beat one. The range cannot be pasted into the address.

Measure: “Gó-” before beat one, “ra-” and D on beat one. No strong stroke on “Gó-”.
