I sing too high or too low: find a comfortable key

Start from the voice you speak with. Find comfortable limits at the Tuner. Open the song and switch the Key.

“This song is too high” is something to check, not a verdict on your whole voice. The problem may be one note in the chorus, or a key taken from a recording. First find where the voice sounds easy.

Do not start from the highest note you can squeeze out. The comfortable range ends earlier: where you can still speak the words without tightening your neck, lifting your chin or suddenly shouting.

Start from the voice you speak with

Say, calmly: “today I will sing this verse”. Hold the last vowel without raising your voice. That note does not describe your whole range, but it sits in the comfortable part of it.

Open the Tuner and hear the reference notes. Compare them with the held vowel. The Tuner microphone is for tuning the guitar. It does not promise to name your voice.

Lower and upper limits, without forcing

From the speaking note, slide the voice down a small step and come back. Repeat while the word stays clear. When the voice scrapes, disappears or needs extra force, you are outside today’s comfortable try. Write down the last easy note as the bottom for now.

Return to the speaking note and go up in small steps. Stop at tension, a sudden thin sound or a tilted head. The last note before that point matters more than a record reached with one shout. If it hurts, end the test. You are choosing a song key, not training range.

Now move the song, not the volume

Open Hej sokoły and switch on Chord sheet (“kwit” in the app), so you can see the words. Sing one verse in the current key. Mark the place where the voice starts reaching or sinking. Do not change the strum or the grips yet.

On the song page, switch Key and sing the same verse again. The address does not open a ready-made key, so you set it in the song. When the song moves up, a capo can leave familiar grips in place. Check that mechanism later in Morskie Opowieści: the saved move from F to C shows a capo at fret 5 and the grips Am, G, Em and C. That card has no lyrics, so it is not the main voice try.

Keep the setting where the low opening and the highest place in the verse come out without extra effort. Comfort on one note is not enough. The key has to hold the whole chosen excerpt.

Louder does not raise the pitch for good, and it does not replace a lower key. If the verse needs a shout, come down with Key or a capo. Do not force the voice.

There is no prize for the key from a recording. The chord letters may change. A good version lets you finish the verse without a fight. Do not carry the same setting automatically into the next song: every melody has a different bottom and top.

Switch the key of Hej sokoły

Switch on Chord sheet. Sing a verse in the current key, then switch Key on the song page. Louder does not replace a lower key.

Measure: the whole verse comes out without reaching, or you know you need to go down.

Hej sokoły for the voice try. Morskie Opowieści only for the F to C capo at fret 5.
